Ecuador Residence and Visa:
Obtaining your residency in Ecuador requires you to research and verify the accuracy of all information; also it might require some patience. The information below may be current at the present time but is always subject to change. For more up to date information you would need to contact your local representative of Ecuador Ministry of Foreign Affairs at your local Consulate of Ecuador.
It will be safe to hire a local Attorney if you do not speak Spanish; they will help you understand all the legalities required through the process while overseas or in Ecuador.
You would normally arrive on a Tourist Visa and get a T-3 stamp placed in your passport. This allows you up to 90 days in the country. If you are planning on staying longer than 90 days then seek advice from your local Ecuadorian Consulate. There you can apply for a 12-IX visa, or you could also apply for this visa while you are in Ecuador. Just don’t leave it until too late as these things take time in Ecuador, better get to it in the first 30 days after arriving in Ecuador.
You actually need the 12-IX Visa before you can apply for residency in Ecuador. It is a requirement that needs to be filed along with your residency papers. A resident visa allows you permanent residence and you can still travel outside of Ecuador. One really important issue is that you cannot leave the country for more than 90 days per year in the first two years of your residency; and after that you can only leave for 18 consecutive months while you have the Ecuadorian residency, by then you better apply for the Ecuadorian Citizenship.
There are several different visas that you can obtain and the one of the most used by retirees is the 9-I Pensioner Visa. For more details check the following link to Ecuador Foreign Ministry Office – Pensioner Visa Requirements
If you are considering investing at least $25,000 for one person then you can obtain a 9-II Investor of Real Estate Visa. Now this can be monies put into a CD or property.
The pensioner visa will entitle you too many of the retirement benefits in Ecuador except the right to vote.
For a 9-I Pensioner Visa, you will need to receive from a stable pension or trust fund a minimum income of $800 US. You will need to add $100 US for each dependent that you bring with you.
Senior Citizens Discounts and Benefits in Ecuador:
Ecuador still remains to be one of the best places in the world for retirees. It is one of the few countries in the world that allows you to enter with an automatic 90 day tourist visa, and it has great benefits for senior citizens.
The pensioner visa will entitle you too many of the retirement benefits in Ecuador except the right to vote.
For a 9-I Pensioner Visa, you will need to receive from a stable pension or trust fund a minimum income of $800 UD. You will need to add $100 UD for each dependent that you bring with you.
Under the 2008 Constitution, senior citizens receive prioritized attention, both in the public and private sectors, especially within the fields of social and economic inclusion. In accordance with Ecuadorian laws, senior citizens are those who are 65 years-old and over. (See Article 36 of the Constitution)
The Ecuadorian government guarantees to senior citizens the following rights:
- Access to free health care and medication.50% discounts in public and private transportation services.
- Discounts for special events such as galleries, theater plays and other related arts.
- Tax exemptions.
- Exempt from notaries and registration fees, in accordance with the law. (See Article 37 of the Constitution)
- 50% off electric and water bills.
- 50% off round trip international flights from Ecuador
Would these benefits/discounts be afforded to everyone, including American Citizenss whether resident or not?
The 2008 Constitution provides no distinction between foreigners and nationals regarding civil rights. However, according to “Ley del Anciano” (Law pertaining Senior Citizens), “the beneficiaries of this Act are those individuals who are 65 years-old or over, whether nationals or foreigners, who are legally established in the country (those who have Ecuadorian residency).”
If there are discounts/benefits, is there some sort of senior citizen’s card that is issued? If so, by whom?
According to the law pertaining Senior Citizens, Ecuadorian senior citizens are only required to present their National I.D. at the entity that provides the discount or benefit (such as a hospital, theater, when getting on a bus). In the case of foreigners, the rule is basically the same- required to present a form of I.D. (such as a passport, Ecuadorian National I.D., Ecuadorian Census card, etc.).
Who is the entity that is in charge of these benefits?
No particular entity, however a branch of government that is dedicated to raise awareness about senior citizens’ rights, among others, is the Ministerio de Inclusión Social y Económica.

Since the dawn of time, Ecuador has been related to nature. When you travel around Ecuador you will find an abundance of butterflies, gathering of fishes or this amazing tree called Guayacan. At the South end of the country, you will find 5,000 square foot of an incredible natural setting for this tree, “Los Bosques de Guayacan” a forest that is still intact. Next to this wonder of nature, you will find so many different areas that are full of wildlife, botanical plants and exotic trees, so many species that have not yet been discovered by modern scientists.
Guayacan, a tree that stands out at in Ecuador due to its stunning beauty. The botanical name is Tabebuia guayacan (Bignoniaceae). You would find it everywhere in Ecuador, but especially appreciate all its flowering beauty at this untouched forest site located at this small touristic town Mangahurco in the Province of Loja.
Many flowers appear on still leafless stems at the end of the dry season, making the floral display more conspicuous. The Guayacan Tree usually produces big yellow flowers by end of January with the first rains at the end of the dry season. It is a notable flowering tree. The flowers are 1 to 4 inches wide and are produced in dense clusters. Corolla colors vary between species ranging from white, light pink, yellow, lavender, magenta, or red. They are useful as honey plants for bees, and are popular with certain hummingbirds.
The Guayacan is not only beautiful but also offers relief for several health problems. Tea made from the flowers treats urine and kidney trouble. The flower tea has also been used to treat tuberculosis in Latin America.
Promoting touristic sites of this tree in Ecuador will help so much to prevent deforestation of this species. Guayacan’s wood has high local commercial demand, reason why Guayacan deforestation needs to be managed and control. If locals are able to obtain an income from touristic harmless resources like this one, changes will happen through time, and we will see less damage down to Mother Nature.
Here I leave you with a promotional video from the Secretary of Tourism from Ecuador – Ecuador Travel

Legal Real Estate and Development Transactions in Ecuador:
When informal business transactions were first recognized in Ecuador, the discussion focused on inefficient public institutions, cumbersome registration processes and a general distrust of the government – all factors that spur the creation of a market outside a country’s formal structures – does days are gone, Ecuador Real Estate Law enforcement is making its way into this new emerging economy. If you put together all these new changes with a stable US Dollar economy, Ecuador becomes a great property investment location to live and retire.
Use to be that many locals and foreigners depended on informal Real Estate employment or businesses for a living, but informal employment has had serious consequences at the levels of both the individual and society. Beyond earning levels, informal employment makes OWNER, BUYER, AGENT ‘s basic legal rights vulnerable and difficult to defend.
The only real problem you may find will be the language barrier, there is a straight forward solution: translation services or bilingual proof services. Remember, there are many local Ecuadorians Professionals that speak English and Spanish fluently.
Do Not Pay Buyer’s Agent or Finder’s Fees!
Ecuador is in the process of strict regulation of its Real Estate Market and Development. For many years, Real Estate Developers, Service Providers, Agents, Locals and Foreigners Vendors, For Sale by Owner….. transactions have been mostly cash transfers due to the relaxed nature of informal transactions.
The Ecuadorian law is enforcing and updating its Real Estate Laws, this will improve the overall Real Estate Service Industry and Development. Important for you to know: Ecuadorian Law estates that the Seller pays a sales commission to the listing agent, then the listing agent splits that commission with the agent bringing the buyer to the transaction much like in the US.
How should you go for assistance?

There are a lot of things going on in Guayaquil these days. Lately, I have been trying to catch up with all the business and social meetings all at the same time. My challenge is to keep up with the local paste to provide you with accurate information.
One good side of this “on the go” is learning the art of mixing business with pleasure. The smart and fun part of living and working in this small part of the world is realizing that Ecuadorians, especially people from Guayaquil love to entertain and socialize while doing great business deals.
After this cultural introduction let me tell you the latest news in this place…
Guayaquil as part of his itinerary, and he meet with British business representatives settled in this city. Through the meeting, he found out that they are expanding and doing well in their business. Examples of some of those are Unilever and SAB Miller.
Mr. Lamb came to the conclusion of needing a greater presence in this part of the country. UK aims to increase its investments in Ecuador and will make more inroads in the market for Guayaquil. Once in London, he will communicate to my authorities on the need to shift our resources from Quito to this city. Mr. Lamb also mentioned that UK Embassy colleagues agree that there are several business opportunities to explore here, at this new branch, they want to open new market opportunities for bilateral trade.
Such a great news for all of us that are investing in Ecuador, perfect timing and another good reason to add to the “Fiestas Octubrinas”. The city of Guayaquil – “La perla del Pacifico” is celebrating its independence day next Sunday the 9th.
There are a lot of cultural and social events this weekend. In my plans, I am starting the afternoon watching the soccer game as part of the selecting period for the “2014 World Cup in Brazil”, we will meet with friends for ceviche and beer. Later in the evening we all are going for some Salsa to the Duran Fair. Tomorrow I will visit the out door plazas with local painters exhibitions and shows, and Sunday on my way to Playas: biking, eating fresh seafood, and I must include a bit of work by visiting one of our on going projects to gather pictures for my clients overseas.
If you will like to know more about the local activities please watch the video and follow their link.
There’s no shortage of wonderful locations in which you can retire in various parts of the world. It may be a good idea to take a look at the Dominican Republic and see what this region has to offer.
This is a region that is a feast for the eyes, with beautiful beaches, clear water, a wonderfully breezy environment and a lot more. But the reason why it is so popular is because it’s a place where you can live very comfortably for as little as $2,000 or even less.
Although people in the Dominican Republic seem to earn less money, amazingly they are able to live much better, and the pace of their lives is calm and unhurried than people in the United States. Why is that? Because the cost of living in the United States is astronomical compared to the cost of living in the Dominican Republic. Add to this the fact that on top of all the privileges you have living in this country, you can actually get 18% interest on your bank account – tax free! Who could ask for more?
There’s no doubt about it, Dominicans are in the enviable position of being able to live life to the hilt. Remember, your dollar investments here are earning high rates of interest, all of which is tax-free. This is a country that has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. And then, take a look at health care facilities here. You won’t be disappointed – they are as modern as you need them to be.
You may argue that there are other places in the Caribbean that are just as appealing. True enough, but the scope of the Dominican Republic for both the investor and the retired person remain unmatched.
Just wait! In few more days we will show you the best property options at this wonderfull destination, take a look in this video, and you will follow in love right away..

Start building a network of professionals and friends overseas as the stepping stones to a great life overseas…
I don’t need to remind you of the problems we are facing today, in North America and elsewhere. You may already be watching your nest egg shrink…and, like many, may already be taking a hit on your day-to-day quality of life.
So, we get excited around the idea of a brand-new start in a brand-new place where you can enjoy all the things you might be missing out on right now.
Then, reality sets in.
You will have to sort through an overwhelming number of possibilities out there, making all of us tipsy when thinking about crossing the fence to a complete new setting in life.
First, let´s check some basic ideas to help you see if living or retiring overseas works for you.
People who chose to retire overseas weren’t prepared to settle for an average retirement. They were looking for a better quality life under a lower income.
The word “retirement” has nothing to do with checking out or taking it easy, unless you want it to and could afford to. Maybe this is your case, here you will find great places were you could improve your golf swing or join a bridge club…or you could spend your days lazing in a hammock beneath a palm tree. And no one would think any less of you.
For the rest of us who are not ready to take up a position on the sidelines of life, there are plenty of options to show you here in Ecuador, South America. And, I am pretty sure they could be applied in other Latin American countries.
The world is alive with opportunities for fun and for profit, no matter what your age. That’s because it is easier today than ever before to live, travel, invest, and retire as best suits your personal agenda.
Now, if all this ideas are for you, then you should start working on a plan to make your dream come true. My first suggestion will be to start building an online network of people (professionals and friends) that will help you along the journey.
I know sometimes it is difficult to garner the right information. They usually tell you that you are not going to find reliable answers to your life-overseas questions by simply surfing the web…or reading all the books you can find on the subject.
I believe that if we pull together to provide the right information online from honest professionals at each local place, we will be able to overcome this sort of limitation.
Apply your common sense and ask every question that you can possibly conceive. On this blog, we should be able to provide an open source of information for your plans to live overseas, and not to depend only on paid sources from people who have experience traveling or living overseas and making a profit out of it.
If you like to share o become friends to help others online, please write something about your experiences when going overseas. Here you have few topics to start springing ideas in you:
How much money do I need to set aside for going overseas? Should I sell my house? Will I rent a property overseas or should I buy?
Things like local health care, Immigration laws, ways to make an extra income, local customs and the way they deal with foreigners, how to buy property, especially in developing markets, any main issues faced by all would-be overseas retirees…
Good luck and welcome to the Global Community!
